Network Monitoring for East African ISPs: The Practical Guide

14 April 2025 · 6 min read

Every ISP in East Africa deals with fiber cuts, ONU signal drops, and power outages. The question is not whether these incidents will happen -they will. The question is whether you know before your customers do.

The cost of reactive monitoring

An ISP that finds out about an outage from subscriber complaints is already 20–30 minutes behind the incident. By the time the fault is located and a technician is dispatched, subscribers have been offline for an hour or more.

Ten affected subscribers = ten WhatsApp messages to your support line = two hours of support time = real churn risk for the most vocal complainers.

Proactive monitoring cuts that timeline in half and demonstrates to subscribers that you take reliability seriously.

What to monitor

ONU signal levels: ONUs operate within a receive power range (typically -8 to -27 dBm). An ONU drifting toward the edge of this range will fail -usually within days. Monitoring signal levels lets you dispatch a technician proactively, before the subscriber notices a problem.

Router uptime and CPU: a MikroTik router with unusually high CPU or memory usage is a leading indicator of a pending failure or a network attack.

Link state: monitor each distribution switch and access point uplink. A link going down at 3am is a fiber cut or power issue -you want to know immediately.

Latency: persistent latency spikes to key peering points are the first sign of an upstream provider problem. You want to know before subscribers start complaining of buffering.

Alerting that works

A monitoring system that sends alerts by email at 3am is not useful. The alert needs to reach whoever is on call via a channel they will actually see -WhatsApp.

Effective alert configurations: - Critical (link down, ONU offline) → WhatsApp immediately, no delay - Warning (signal degradation, high latency) → WhatsApp at next business hour - Info (resolved alerts) → WhatsApp confirmation when the issue clears

Include in the alert: the affected device, the subscriber or location, the type of fault, and a direct link to the monitoring dashboard for detail.

Integration with billing

Network monitoring becomes significantly more powerful when integrated with your subscriber management system. When an ONU goes offline, you can see immediately which subscriber is affected, their contact details, and whether they have any outstanding support tickets.

Metron ISP combines network monitoring and subscriber management in a single platform, with WhatsApp alerts included.
