WhatsApp Payment Reminders That Actually Get Paid

31 March 2025 · 4 min read

WhatsApp has a 98% open rate in Kenya. SMS has fallen below 60% due to spam filtering and number porting. If you are still sending payment reminders via SMS, you are leaving 40% of your messages unread.

Here is the exact cadence that recovers over 60% of overdue balances before suspension is needed.

The 4-message cadence

**Message 1 -3 days before due date (pre-emptive)**

> Hi [Name], your Metron internet subscription of KES [amount] is due on [date]. Pay via M-Pesa: Paybill [number], Account [reference]. Reply if you have any questions.

This message reaches subscribers when they are in a good mood and not yet frustrated. Conversion rate: ~45%.

**Message 2 -Due date (gentle nudge)**

> Hi [Name], your subscription expires today. KES [amount] via M-Pesa Paybill [number], Acc [reference]. Your connection stays on all day -take a moment to renew.

Conversion rate from subscribers who missed Message 1: ~30%.

**Message 3 -Day 1 of suspension (recovery)**

> Hi [Name], your connection was paused this morning. Resume instantly: KES [amount] via Paybill [number], Acc [reference]. Paid? You'll be back online in under a minute.

This message converts because it emphasises the speed of reconnection. Conversion: ~20% of remaining.

**Message 4 -Day 3 of suspension (final)**

> Hi [Name], we'd hate to lose you. Your account is still reserved -pay KES [amount] before [date+7] to keep your number and history. After that, we'll release your slot. Paybill [number], Acc [reference].

Urgency and loss aversion. Converts an additional 10–15%.

What not to do

  • Do not send more than one message per day -it triggers spam reports and blocks
  • Do not use threatening language -it damages the relationship and reduces conversion
  • Do not send from a number that cannot receive replies -subscribers often have questions

Automating the cadence

Manual WhatsApp messages at the right time for 500+ subscribers is operationally impossible. A billing platform with WhatsApp Business API integration sends these messages automatically, personalised, at the right time for each subscriber's billing cycle.
